Bethel Medical College and the Future

Bethel Medical College, established in 2004 and located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, sets a standard of superior medical education and training. With a commitment to fostering innovation and offering high-quality, lifelong learning opportunities, the college makes its programs accessible, effective, affordable, and adaptable to the needs of all its students. This approach ensures graduates are equipped to contribute to the health and well-being of individuals, families, and the broader community.

The college, renowned for its distinguished status, is one of the select few private institutions in Ethiopia accredited by the Ministry of Education to offer a medical doctoral degree program. It plays a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare in Ethiopia by educating and training doctors, nurses, health officers, and other essential medical professionals, all of whom are urgently needed to care for the populace.

The Ethiopian Situation: New Challenges in the Region

Returning to the country brings new challenges to the forefront, particularly with civil war violence in the Tigray region, with millions of people displaced, injured, and suffering from food and shelter insecurity. The Bethel Medical College is the recipient of the Hunt Foundation’s efforts to advance the medical arts in the country, training new medical professionals to care for children and adults throughout the nation.

First established by Dr. Yigeremu Asfaw, the college delivers quality medical training. The Hunt Foundation’s efforts to support the college include building a library, expanding the hospital wing, and creating medical training pods where students learn modern medical techniques and processes. While the work continues, we are proud of what has been accomplished to date in equipping the facility, and we look forward to continuing our efforts with the help of our individual and corporate donors.

Ethiopian Patient Needs

While our initial focus was on spinal injuries and neurological conditions, it is clear that more was needed. Many burn patients in the area live with the physical and emotional scars of severe burns. We were impressed by the work of a local plastic surgeon, Dr. Tesfaye Mulat, who performed successful surgeries and provided on-the-ground insights into the extreme need for more doctors capable of treating burn victims with the latest techniques.

Facial Surgeries, Hand Surgeries

Medical training in facial surgeries for children and adults with a cleft palate or severe hand injuries is also a focus in our efforts to support the Bethel Medical College. These conditions affect tens of thousands of children and adults who have minimal, if any, access to advanced surgeries. We offer support to the hospital by mentoring students and local surgeons with new techniques to help their patients live happier, productive lives.

This experience was a powerful reminder of the profound impact our collective dedication can have. It goes beyond constructing buildings and developing infrastructure; it’s about addressing the real human needs of those we serve. Your continued support is essential in meeting these needs and making a lasting difference in lives.
